Every post on saltedlolly.com now has a proper comment section again, and it’s built on the open web. If you have a Bluesky account, you can sign in right here under any post and leave a comment, reply to someone else’s, like or repost, or quote the post on your own profile, all without leaving the page.

How it works

Every post I publish is announced from the blog’s Bluesky account, @saltedlolly.com. The replies to that announcement are the comments. Under each post, press Respond with your Atmosphere Account, type your handle (something like you.bsky.social) and approve it on Bluesky’s own page. That’s it.

A few things I like about doing it this way:

  • Your comments are yours. They’re ordinary Bluesky posts, saved to your own account. Delete one in the Bluesky app and it disappears here too.
  • No new account, no password here. You sign in with the account you already have, on Bluesky’s own page; this site never sees your password. It only asks for permission to post, like and repost for you, and you can withdraw that at any time in your Bluesky settings.
  • It’s not just Bluesky. Bluesky is built on an open network called the Atmosphere (the AT Protocol), and any Atmosphere account works, whichever company or person hosts it.
  • The app works too. If you’d rather reply in the Bluesky app, use the Respond on Bluesky link under each post. Your reply shows up here either way.

Once you’re signed in you can also @mention people (with suggestions as you type, like in the app), and quoting a post shows you a preview of exactly how it will look on Bluesky.

The old comments from the WordPress days are still here too, marked with a little WordPress logo.

I built this myself for the site, as an add-on for Astro, the open-source tool the site is made with. I’ve shared it so other Astro websites can have the same: Atmosphere Comments for Astro.

Do give it a try: leave a comment below and say hello.
